Getting to Whitby

Whitby is a historic seaside town on the North Yorkshire coast and is easily accessible by road, rail, and bus from across the UK.

  • By Car 
    Whitby is well connected by several major routes. From the north, take the A171 from Middlesbrough, which offers a scenic drive across the North York Moors. From the south, the A171 from Scarborough provides a direct coastal route. If travelling from York or the A1(M), follow the A64 towards Malton, then join the A169 which takes you through Pickering and across the North York Moors National Park into Whitby.
  • By Train
    Whitby railway station connects to the national rail network via Middlesbrough. Travellers can take a train to Middlesbrough and then join the scenic Esk Valley Line directly into Whitby. From the south, you can travel to Scarborough or York and connect via bus or rail services.
  • By Bus
    Regular bus services run to Whitby from surrounding towns and cities including Scarborough, Middlesbrough, York, and Leeds. The Coastliner and Arriva services provide reliable connections throughout the region.
     

Parking in Whitby

There are several public car parks in and around Whitby town centre, including West Cliff, Abbey Headland, and Marina Back car parks. During busy periods and events, arriving early is recommended as parking can fill quickly.
